MOVIE REVIEW: The Shape of Water

Do I think it deserved all the hype? Not really, no. Do I think you should go see it? Yeah, I do.

Who is in it: Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg

What is it: Set in the cold war era of the early 1960’s, it is the fable-like tale of the relationship that forms between a lonely, deaf cleaner Elisa and a mysterious amphibious creature, who is being held captive and tortured in a government laboratory.

Why should I watch it: If you are a fan of Director Guillermo del Toro (Crimson Peak, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim), you will love this Oscar-winning movie and it’s ethereal dream-like quality. As I am more a fan of the lead actresses, Hawkins and Spencer, who were both Oscar-nominated for their performances, I do appreciate the storytelling, incorporating del Toro’s almost constant themes of isolation and monsters, but this movie is not for everyone.

However, if you bring just yourself, your popcorn and your imagination with you, you will easily be swept away by the stellar cast, wonderful story and the truly breathtaking cinematography.
