MOVIE REVIEW: Red Sparrow

Sue Ellen -

Entertainment Movies

Lawrence and Edgerton can do better. Especially Edgerton. Joel, please go back to writing and acting in your own stuff. The stuff that matters. The stuff that is amazing.

Who is in it: Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker, Ciaran Hands, Joely Richardson, Bill Camp, Jeremy Irons, Thekla Reuten

What is it: The Black Widow origin movie. Nah just kidding.

Dominika is a Russian ballerina whose career is cut short after an accident. With a sick mother to care for, she has little choice but to become a Sparrow ……… a Russian spy who uses her body and mind as a weapon.

Turns out she is really good at it and before long, she is tasked with finding out who is the mole, the traitor in the Russian government.

Why should I watch it: Okay so I can’t say I didn’t know what I was going to see because I did, but I genuinely thought that it would be better than what it was. The cast is great but they were all let down by a confusing and utterly convoluted script. It was like someone threw out every idea for a spy thriller they had ever had and inexplicably, just decided to use every single one of them.

The relationship between the two leads was never fully explained or developed and as such, you are wondering why suddenly, they both seem willing to give everything for the other. If the screenwriter had spent a little more time on building this relationship and a little less time torturing a near-naked Lawrence, the movie would be all the better for it.
