The Civic Theatre production of Little Mermaid presented by Hunter performing arts is encouraging kids to wear their favourite “mer” costume to the three day run of shows from 9-11 October 2014.
In a coup for Hunter performing arts, the theatrical license to produce a the first full scale musical version of Disney favourite Little Mermaid Jnr was won by Hunter Region Drama School (HRDS).
The production sees 50 talented local young performers from 9 to 19 years take to the stage for the production of Little Mermaid which is expected to attract audiences from Sydney, the Central Coast and Upper Hunter.
These kids travel en masse to the USA to perform parts of Little Mermaid Jnr at the Junior Theatre Festival in Atlanta Georgia in January 2015 – the first group ever to represent Australia at this prestigious event. In fact the first group in the world outside of America!
Plus the cast will take part in exclusive theatre and acting workshops in New York, Atlanta, Hollywood and Disneyland.
As Little Mermaid movies are a favourite with little girls, we are inviting littlies to wear their favourite “mer” costume to the performances according to producer Daniel Stoddart.
“But Ariel and company are much-loved by people of all ages, and we’ve had strong interest from many people – not so little anymore,” Mr Stoddart said.
“This production will be like nothing Newcastle has seen before. We’ve taken the Hunter’s outstanding young talent, secured an internationally-loved story and songs. We’ve combined these with innovative sets and mind blowing costumes by local award winning costume designer Jennifer Ellicott to deliver a show that would shine on Broadway,” he added.
Featuring all the hit tunes from the animated classic, including the Academy Award winning “Under the Sea”.
