Kicking off the roller derby year with a BUZZ!

Newcastle Live -

Newcastle Roller Derby League will kick off their new season with a BUZZ instead of a BANG when Leonie Johnson undergoes some charitable hair loss in aid of The Leukemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave on March 14.

The Leukemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave is one of Australia’s largest annual fundraisers. Each year, more than 12 000 people are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder. Money raised by World’s Greatest Shave goes toward researching treatment methods and cures for these illnesses, as well as providing support to patients and their families when they need it most.

Our brave volunteer Leonie Johnson (sister-in-law of our own Reggie Ramjet) has pledged to raise a whopping $7000 for the cause, and because she is a superstar, she is already more than half way there! NRDL are proud to be assisting Leonie to reach her target and then some by donating a portion of our ticket sales for this bout to World’s Greatest Shave.

As if some good old-fashioned charitable hair loss wasn’t enough reason to come along to this event, you also get not one, but TWO games of roller derby! The first game will see a rematch between the Maitland Roller Girls and Coastal Knockouts Roller Derby team The Saffires. Who will come out on top this time? We don’t know, but it’ll be exciting to find out! Game number two will feature players from NRDL and some friends from other leagues revisiting our furry theme from the end of last year, with the Mustdashers and the Beardiful Ladies duking it out in the name of all that is hairy. Don’t miss it!

Tickets are available online from or at the door on the day. Adults (14+) $15, kids (7+) $10, Family (2 adults & 2 kids 7+) $40.

This event will be held at The Newcastle Showgrounds Exhibition Centre, next to the NEC. Doors open 5pm for a 5:30 start. Don’t forget to bring a blanket or cushion to sit on if you’re keen for suicide seating! (16+ only).
