There’s an oft-quoted figure that Newcastle was once (and may well still be) the home to more artists per capita than any other city. Is this true? Who knows? It’s near impossible to verify, but from personal experience, we do have a lot of creative types in this city.

And there’s an increasing amount of spaces for artists to collaborate and galleries to display their work. Here are just some of my favourites.

Newcastle Art Gallery

Located on Lamen Street Newcastle this is the city’s Gallery. This Brutalist masterpiece of a building was opened by the Queen in March 1977, and it’s housed exhibitions of local, national and international prominence over two floors ever since.

A new area is The Sculpture Garden on Darby Street, where rather fabulous events often take place. Last Fridays in an event on the last Friday of the month, where there’s live music, a pop-up bar and interesting programming. It’s the perfect way to introduce yourself to the Gallery.

The Lock-Up

Located in a repurposed police lock up in Newcastle’s east end, this is one of the city’s most intriguing venues. With a diverse program representing edgy, contemporary works – the art is as evocative as its setting.

Of all the spaces in the venue, the former men’s exercise yard, known as The Yard, is often used for events and function and it’s one of my faves.
