COCO CUBANO: A taste of Cuba in Charlestown

Newcastle Live -

Lifestyle

Newcastle Live popped into the newly opened Coco Cubano in Charlestown last weekend for a spot of lunch and a few cheeky cocktails. Standing like a little oasis in Charlestown Square we found Coco Cubano to be both relaxed and inspiring.

Walking into Coco Cubano through the Charlestown Square food court you’d be excused for thinking you’d just walked through a worm hole. The noise and hustle of those feeding and debating their next bargain seems to drift away as you enter, replaced by the bright, relaxed and friendly atmosphere of a Cuban inspired bar and eatery.

The kitschy interior gives way to an open air courtyard featuring Morticia Addams inspired wicker throne chairs. The grand and wooden central bar showcases a vast array of Cuban rums and other exotic cocktail ingredients and pulls the two sections together giving customers easy access to what matters from either location, inside or out.

We chose a jug of red sangria to get things started and when it arrived we knew we’d made the right decision. Muddled citrus and a beautiful mix of red wine, orange liquor, spices and lemonade were the perfect accompaniment to our early afternoon.

After making our way through the vast lunch menu we chose to dine on a mix of nachos with Cuban slaw, Halloumi salad and a few burritos. Not long after our menus were whisked away a team of waiters descended on our table with our chosen dishes that were both simply presented and satisfyingly delicious.

The combination of carefully thought out interiors, relaxed atmosphere, spicy menu and cocktail selection had us raving about Coco Cubano all afternoon.

We can definitely see this place becoming a mecca for people dragged along to Charlestown Square for shopping trips and it wouldn’t surprise us Coco Cubano becomes ‘the place to be’ as more people experience the wonders that lay inside.

BEST BITS: The relax vibe, kitschy interior, sangria and service from the friendly staff.

WORST BITS: Nowhere to smoke the cigars.

Coco Cubano opens early and closed late. They serve delicious and high quality meals, tapas, beverages, espresso, chocolate and cocktails, in a vibrant, fun and uplifting atmosphere.
