Best alternative comedy nights in Newcastle

There’s a little bit of a comedy boom happening in Newcastle right now. The scene has never been stronger and there are some really unique shows (which are all free or just $5) springing up all over the place. Our mate, Ethan Andrews put together this list of some of the best.

Madam Speaker
 @ Central

Hecklers are the bane of a comic’s existence. Their interruptions can completely derail a show. So what would happen if there was a show full of interruptions? And what if drunken rambling those heckles were punchlines coming from another comic. That’s the idea behind Madam Speaker, where two comedians share the stage and end up completely off the cuff. Stand ups from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival often drop in too.

Next show: March 2, 7.30pm
Schedule: Every second Wednesday

Kill Your Younglings
 @ The Press Book House

Kill Your Younglings

Kill Your Younglings is part podcast, part salon and part sledging masterclass where comedians, writers and artists are given the chance to nerd out over their greatest obsession. Previous guests have discussed topics as diverse as opera and the NFL, delving into their guilty pleasures, secret shames and pet peeves. Some obsessions border on insane, most notably the revelation that a local filmmaker sports a full back tattoo of a treasure map from their favourite video game.

Next show: March 9, 7.30pm
Schedule: Every fourth Wednesday
Cost: $5

Clown and Anchor Comedy
@ The Crown & Anchor Hotel

Clown and Anchor Comedy

When this open mic started it was a game changer for comedy in Newcastle and two years on it remains a staple of the scene, giving local performers a regular space to hone their act. Its ‘sign up on the night, everyone gets a shot policy’ allows aspiring comics to make their stage debut and the occasional crazies to try out public speaking. This has created a folklore full of rich characters, the most notable (and unlikely) of which is former NBN anchor Ray Dineen, who endured a brutal roasting from a comedian at a gig in 2014.

Inspired by Letterman and The Graham Norton Show, Tonight’s the Night is a must see for lovers of talk shows. Each show features three of Newcastle’s most interesting minds and talented creatives come together for an evening of comedy, interviews, live music and weird stuff. At the sold out premiere last month an audience member was forced to eat 40 muffins in an hour. Yep. Weird stuff.

Next show: February 29, 7.30pm
Schedule: Last Monday of every month
Cost: $5
