Founded in early 2015, Night of Rhymes has grown into one of the most vibrant hip hop events in the local scene. Having booked hiphop heavyweights, Mind Over Matter in February the event is back on July 31 for another showcase of local MC’s at the Croatian Wickham Sports Club.
We chatted to one of the organisers, Josh Oliver about what to expect.
The last night of rhymes we went to was in Belmont. Why the venue change?
Night of Rhymes is still looking for a suitable home, although it was successful at The Belmont Hotel were looking to reach a larger market and Lake Macquarie isn’t the best location for a hiphop night.
You’ve put together a great line up, can you tell us how you select the acts for the bill?
Generally, we like to give virgin performers ago. Wr listen to artists music before selecting them and its purely based on that. Night of Rhymes is a haven for hiphop heads in Newcastle and we also like good local music.
For someone who’s never been to a hip hop gig, what can they expect?
Night of Rhymes is a chance to discover fresh, local hiphop. We have a DJ dedicated to making you move and if thats not enough then the MCs will surely get you going. We also have a whole bunch of FREE giveaways and good vibes to pass on.
How healthy is the local scene?
From a Night of Rhymes perspective the scene is in A1 condition, although there is some questions to be raised over the lack of support for local hiphop in Newcastle, we’re doing everything in our power to bring about positive change.
