The 1980’s was a historical Music decade and on Sunday the 20th September you’ll get the chance to relive it at Wests Leagues Club. We spoke to one of the stars of the show, Nik Kershaw about reliving the 80’s, the New Wave sound and how he’s preparing for a national tour.
Four of Britain’s best-loved music icons of the 80’s – singer and musician PAUL YOUNG, musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist NIK KERSHAW, pop duo GO WEST featuring lead vocalist PETER COX and rhythm guitarist and back-up vocalist RICHARD DRUMMIE and finally rock band CUTTING CREW, will be cranking out the hits during this massive retrospective.
We started our our interview with Nik Kershaw by asking him if he could hear the New Wave sound he pioneered with songs like, “Wouldn’t it be good” in contemporary pop music.
“I often get asked this question, and to be honest I can’t hear it” he tells us over the phone from him home in the UK.
“I’m not sure I knew what it was when I was writing the music. I just created something that I loved and later on people gave it the label, New Wave”.
Kershaw, a former jazz-funk guitarist, was a 1980’s teen idol. His 62 weeks on the U.K Singles Chart in 1984 beat all other solo artists of the time. As wells as his own his, penned a number of hits “I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”, “Wouldn’t It Be Good” and “The Riddle” he also wrote songs for other artists with Elton John describing him as “one of the best songwriters of a generation”.
So how does an artist with his many years of experience stay match fit on a long tour such as this?
“Being healthy on the road is a bit of a myth really. You try to stay on your game as much as possible, but with all the travel and early calls you have to take what you can get” he laughs.
You can see how Nik holds up when 80’s Mania rolls into Wests New Lambton on Sunday the 20th September. Tickets are on sale from the club now.
