5 things we learnt from Roger Thomas of Naturally 7

You guys went into overdrive when we uploaded the video Naturally 7 sining John Farnham’s classic, You’re The Voice to our Facebook page. So we were pumped when Roger Thomas from the group phoned us last week for a chat about their show at the Civic Theatre on August 30.

We held ourselves back from asking Roger to beat box for us and got down to asking questions about their current tour, presented by World Vision. Here’s what we learnt from our chat.

1 – The boys from Naturally 7 respect John Farnham

“We’ve got a lot of respect for John, man. We recorded You’re The Voice in the original key and let me tell you, that boy can sing. It’s right up there.”

2 – They wanted to do the Bagpipe solo but just couldn’t get the sound right

“We interpreted most of the instruments from the original recording of You’re The Voice except for the Bagpipes. When people listen to our sounds I want them to be able to pick the exact instruments we’re and we just couldn’t get that one right.

3 – Rogers connection with World Vision started a while ago

“I’ve been sponsoring a child through World Vision for about 5 years now. So when they called and wanted to work together with Naturally 7, I just thought it was a perfect fit.”

4 – Their sound guy is like the 8th member of the group

“We’ll start working on a song backstage or in a hotel room, but when it comes down to the business it’s important that we work in with Grant (their sound guy). A lot of the time we’re creating the effects with our voices, but often Grant will add something and it just brings it all together.”

5 – They don’t need the effects to make the sounds

“There’s two different mind sets when we perform. When we’re in a studio or performing in concert we can use the effects. But when we go to a radio station or we’re performing in a public space you still get to hear the full thing, we just make adjustments. For example during our concerts the guitar distortion comes from an effect at the sound desk, but when we do it without miss our voices make the distortion.
