5 reasons to see Mavis Staples at Lizotte’s this Friday

Some say gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist, Mavis Staples is the most underrated diva of the century.  Mavis plays Lizotte’s in Lambton this Friday the 10th of April. We’re so pumped for the show we thought we’d share 5 reasons why you should grab a ticket too.

1 – She’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer

Lauryn Hill inducted the Staple Singers into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 1999 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.


 

2 – Mavis’ voice has been sampled by some of the biggest selling hip-hop artists, including Salt ‘N’ Pepa, Ice Cube and Ludacris. 


 

3 – She’s still cookin’. 

In 2014 Mavis recorded with Jeff Tweedy from Wilco for her album, You Are Not Alone.


 

4 – Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

In the article Rolling Stone said that Mavis influenced such artists as Prince, the Pointer Sisters and Amy Winehouse.


 

5 – Mavis is a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner

Mavis Staples won her first Grammy award in the category for Best Americana Album for You Are Not Alone. In her acceptance speech, a shocked and crying Staples said “This has been a long time coming.”


 

Mavis is always ready to return ‘home’ to Australia and looks forward to playing her hits including ‘I’ll Take You There’, ‘Respect Yourself’ and ‘If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me)’ for the Newcastle audience. Grab a ticket to the show and we’ll see you there.
